The Spirit of Glory
The Spirit of Glory rests on you
We have this treasure in earthen vessels (II Cor 4:4-7) it is the light of the Gospel that shines on them. The excellence is because of the power and presence of God. We preach Christ so that the same glorious light of the Gospel can shine on others.
The Gospel has transformational power. It transforms sinners into saints. God changes a land by changing people, one by one!
I Sam 3:19-21 – Samuel established as prophet after Word of God was revealed to him in Shiloh.
Acts 19:8-10 – Saul changed to Paul after Word was revealed to him. He reached the whole of Asia in 2 years!
Isaiah 60:20, 21 – a little one shall become a thousand.
Isaiah 60:1, 2 – Arise and shine for your light has come and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you! He has glorified you!
Romans 8:29, 30 – whom He justified He also glorified
I John 4:4 – greater is He who is in you than He who is in the world.
Rely on God’s promises: As I was with Moses so I will be with you!
Your vision inside of you becomes your Promised Land. Joshua could not do what Moses did; but Moses could not do what Joshua could do. Joshua took the people into the Promised Land.
The boundaries in the spirit realm are expandable – ever increasing faith
Be strong and full of courage, bold and courageous for the Lord your God is with you! Do not be afraid nor dismayed. (Isaiah 41)
Meditate in the Word till you observe what to do. Then you will make your way prosperous and have good success. As you respond to the Holy Spirit promptings within He leads and guides you and shows you things to come.
Isaiah 52: 13 – My servant shall succeed and he will be highly honoured.
David’s mighty men were ordinary men who followed him when he was a fugitive, nobody special. They were in debt, distress and discontented. Yet they achieved great things. David had the ability to inspire them. (I Sam 22)
Three of David’s mighty men
Josheb Basshebeth – ‘one who sat on his seat’ – killed 800. His nick name was Adino – ‘slender’
Eleazar – ‘God has helped’ – fought until his hand clave to his sword (I Chron 27:2)
Shammah – ‘God is there’ – fought alone in a lentil patch when everyone else fled away and God gave him a great victory
Other men in David’s army
Abishai – ‘father of a gift’ – brother of Joab the captain of David’s army killed 300 men
Benaiah –‘Jaweh has built’ – killed 2 giants – killed a lion in a pit of snow –
Asahel – ‘God has made’ – brother of Joah, killed an Egyptian with the man’s own staff.
Abishai, Asahel and Benaiah heard David sight for a drink of water from the well of Bethlehem when the Philistine army took over Bethlehem. They fought their way through and got David some water from that well. David could not drink that water but poured it out as a drink offering because they risked their blood to get it for him.
Some insights into the killing of giants (we all face giants in our lives)
David killed Goliath
Goliath means ‘stripped naked’ and it speaks of the result of original sin of disobedience. David means ‘beloved’. It took the beloved Son of God, Jesus Christ, to cover the nakedness of our sinful flesh with His robe of righteousness!
Ishbi-Benob – dwells in Nob – Nob means ‘fruit’ – speaks of the forbidden fruit – the original temptation to sin and disobey God – wavering between good and evil – frustration – Abishai slew this giant – ‘father of a gift’ – God gave His only begotten Son to slay the giant of evil in our lives – it is a gift of God!
Saph – ‘limitations’ – when we live without God we always ways a limited world – But with God all things are possible. Sibbechai slew this giant. Sibbechai means ‘to entwine or fold together’ – to wait upon the Lord we entwine our wills with His will – you become one with Him and it breaks the limitations in your life!
The Giant of Gob – ‘a pit’ – Joseph’s brothers threw him into a pit – they threw Jeremiah into a pit – jealousy throws people into a pit – they are trapped and cannot get out – the pit of hell – Elhanan defeated this giant ‘God is gracious’ – We approach the throne of grace for help – Heb 4:16 – by grace are you saved through faith! It is a gift!
The Giant of Gath – ‘winepress’ – Jesus trod the winepress alone – and won the battle for us – When you are hard pressed on every side – Jesus prayed in Gethsemane – not My will but Thine be done – Jonathan overcame this giant – ‘God –given’. Jesus did it for us. He defeated this giant of oppression.
Loyalty is not known until it is tested
Courage is not seen until it faces a crisis
Wisdom is not revealed until it solves a problem
David did not let anyone join his army. He confronted them:
Are you a peacemaker or a troublemaker?
Are you coming to help me or to help yourself? Are you coming to further our cause or to promote yourself?
If your heart is not with me, then my heart is not with you. If you back me now while I am nobody, I will use all my influence to see you fulfil your highest potential once I become King. I am anointed to become king.
The reason why Joab is not mentioned as one of David’s mighty men is because he betrayed David on three occasions and often disobeyed orders and took matters into his own hands. He was disloyal – the flaw of original sin. He was a professional soldier, a hireling, and not one of David’s trained men.
Because the Spirit of glory rests on you, you can slay the giants in your life that trouble you – just like David’s mighty men.
