Revelation 20:2,10

We receive several revelations of Christ in this passage that will sustain our victory over the dragon forever.

1. Jesus’ birth is always persecuted.
Every time a child of God is born the devil attacks because new life of God is always a threat to him. The woman in chapter 12 represents the people of God from the beginning. The labour pain in birth speaks of the tribulation and persecution every new move of God goes through.

2. Lucifer has never changed his strategy.
The red dragon speaks of Lucifer. He brought down a third of the angels in heaven with him when he was cast out of heaven because of his pride and rebellion. (v.4) He tries to devour the Child (with a capital ‘C’ speaks of Christ) as soon as it was born, but he could not succeed. When Moses was born, Pharaoh killed all the male children under two years old, but Moses escaped. When Jesus was born, Herod killed all the male children under two, but Jesus escaped. The devil tries to squash a new move of the Spirit of God in its infancy, but Jesus promised that the gates of hell will not prevail against the church that He is building!

3. The Child will rule the nations
The Child will rule all the nations of the world. It was caught up to the throne of God – speaking of the resurrection of Jesus from the dead.

4. God always protects the Woman and Child
The 1, 260 days that the two witnesses prophesied on earth, is the length of time the woman will be in the wilderness with the Child. God prepared a place for her – even in the wilderness. God always has a place of refuge for the people of God. Jesus is our Rock in a weary land, a shadow in the time of storm.

5. The Dragon was displaced from heaven with his fallen angels
The war in heaven between Michael and his angels and the dragon can only have one result; the dragon is defeated! No longer will they have any room in the heavenlies. The devil and his cohorts will be cast down.
The voice in heaven says: ‘Now salvation and strength and the kingdom of our God and the power of His Christ have come for the accuser of our brethren who accused them before our God day and night has been cast down. And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony and they did not love their lives to the death. Therefore, rejoice o heavens and you who dwell in them. Woe to the inhabitants of the earth and the sea. Fort the devil has come down to you having great wrath because he knows that he has a short time.’

6. Jesus’s Martyr witnesses help others to slay the accuser dragon.
They loved Christ more than their own lives – they were willing to be martyrs. The word ‘witness’ is ‘marturos’ and it means ‘martyr’.

7. God’s creation is waiting for the revelation of the true sons of God
Rom 8:19 For the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God.

When the dragon saw that he was cast down, he persecuted the woman who gave birth to the Child. But she was given two wings of a great eagle that she might fly into the wilderness to her place where she is nourished for two and a half years (the first half of the great Tribulation).
The serpent spewed water from his mouth to cause a great flood so that she might be swept away by the flood, but the earth opened up and swallowed up the flood.
The wings that was given to the woman means she was carried away in the spirit like Phillip was caught away after he baptised the Eunuch and was caught away and landed in Azotus about 40 miles away. (Acts 8)

The earth opening up shows that the natural elements are obedient to God’s command. Everything works together for good for those who love God and are called according to His purpose of conforming us to the image of His Son, Jesus Christ (Romans 8:28, 29).

8. True believers keep Jesus’ commands and the battle continues until the dragon is finally slayed.
Rev 20:10 The devil, who deceived them, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where the beast and the false prophet are. And they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.

The dragon was enraged because he lost the battle in the heavens and could not kill the woman so he turned against those who keep the commandments of God and those who have the testimony of Jesus Christ. Could this refer to those Jews who sincerely try to please God by keeping the Old Covenant?
No, it refers to those who keep the New Commandment Jesus gave to His followers: You shall love God with all your heart, your entire mind, and all your strength and your neighbour as yourself. Those who love God shall keep His word. Those who keep the testimony of Jesus Christ are the believers who believe that God raised Jesus from the dead and confess Him as Lord.
