Preached by Apostle Aje Pelser
Harvester Reformational Church, Cape Town
1Pe 2:4 Coming to Him as to a living stone, rejected indeed by men, but chosen by God and precious,
1Pe 2:5 you also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
1Pe 2:6 Therefore it is also contained in the Scripture, "BEHOLD, I LAY IN ZION A CHIEF CORNERSTONE, ELECT, PRECIOUS, AND HE WHO BELIEVES ON HIM WILL BY NO MEANS BE PUT TO SHAME."
1Pe 2:7 Therefore, to you who believe, He is precious; but to those who are disobedient, "THE STONE WHICH THE BUILDERS REJECTED HAS BECOME THE CHIEF CORNERSTONE,"
1Pe 2:8 and "A STONE OF STUMBLING AND A ROCK OF OFFENSE." They stumble, being disobedient to the word, to which they also were appointed.
1Pe 2:9 But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvellous light;
1Pe 2:10 who once were not a people but are now the people of God, who had not obtained mercy but now have obtained mercy.
Here are the specifications of the Cornerstone that in turn, builds us into a spiritual house for God.
1st Specification of the Cornerstone: Positioned in Zion
We are well versed in the fact that Zion now represents the church in a New Testament context. When David bought that land from the Jebusites, he said he would not worship God on a land that cost him nothing. 2 Samuel 24:24
It speaks of sacrifice and tabernacle, of praise and worship, of the heart of David, of the Lion of the tribe of Judah that tabernacles with his people, of the heavenly Jerusalem and the Church of the Firstborn, registered in heaven.
2nd Specification of the Cornerstone: Chosen
The amount of rejection Jesus received at the hands of men, is directly proportional to the amount of acceptance he received from the Father at His baptism, transfiguration and before crucufixion:
Mat 3:17 And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased."
Luk 9:35 And a voice came out of the cloud, saying, "This is My beloved Son. Hear Him!"
Joh 12:27 "Now My soul is troubled, and what shall I say? 'Father, save Me from this hour'? But for this purpose I came to this hour.
Joh 12:28 Father, glorify Your name." Then a voice came from heaven, saying, "I have both glorified it and will glorify it again."
Joh 12:29 Therefore the people who stood by and heard it said that it had thundered. Others said, "An angel has spoken to Him."
3rd Specification of the Cornerstone: Honoured and Precious
Apostle Peter actually had this revealed to him by his knowledge of the prophet Isaiah:
Isa 28:14 Therefore hear the word of the LORD, you scornful men, Who rule this people who are in Jerusalem,
Isa 28:15 Because you have said, "We have made a covenant with death, And with Sheol we are in agreement. When the overflowing scourge passes through, It will not come to us, For we have made lies our refuge, And under falsehood we have hidden ourselves."
Isa 28:16 Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: "Behold, I lay in Zion a stone for a foundation, A tried stone, a precious cornerstone, a sure foundation; Whoever believes will not act hastily.
4th Specification of the Cornerstone: We rest our faith on Him
Luk 6:46 "But why do you call Me 'Lord, Lord,' and not do the things which I say?
Luk 6:47 Whoever comes to Me, and hears My sayings and does them, I will show you whom he is like:
Luk 6:48 He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently against that house, and could not shake it, for it was founded on the rock.
Here we have the combination of hearing and doing His sayings. Faith with works shows acceptance of a doctrine. You need to act on your faith or it is useless to you. When you do that it is like building on a solid cornerstone. The rest of the building is secure because of that rock and it endures any storm that may come.
5th Specification of the Cornerstone: Tested and Approved by God
Jas 1:12 Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.
Mat_4:1 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.
Heb 2:18 For in that He Himself has suffered, being tempted, He is able to aid those who are tempted.
Heb 4:14 Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.
Heb 4:15 For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.
The good news is that when we accept Jesus as the cornerstone of our life, our church, our thinking; his spirit helps us to meet those same specifications and as we are built into a spiritual house for the Lord.
Using the concept of the cornerstone being a stone against which one cuts others, we being to measure up to that specification and thus become useful for the Master Builder.
