Apostolic Commendations

Apostolic Commendations
Preached by Apostle Aje Pelser, Harvester Reformational Church, Cape Town
October 2020

Isn’t it amazing that those who need the most encouragement end up encouraging others!
That is the true apostolic grace that God has given us!

We reach the last stretch of a career in ministry of Apostle Paul. He is lucid and clear on his journey ahead and doesn’t wince at the suffering awaiting him. The emotions are real, the course is set, the purpose sure. And he strengthens the people in his care and warns them of wolves.
Some apostolic commendations that will encourage you are found in this scripture:

Act 20:32 “So now, brethren, I commend you to God and to the word of His grace, which is able to build you up and give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified.

Apostolic Commendations:
1. I commend you to God
2. I commend you to the Word of His Grace
3. God’s Word is able to build you up
4. God’s Word can give you an inheritance
5. God’s Word gives you a standing among the sanctified saints of heaven who have gone before you. A standing amongst the elders of the faith.

1. I commend you to God. An apostolic commendation to God is to be welcomed and cherished as a rare occurrence. The reason is that so few people are interested in the suffering of a sent one. Most people care only for their own needs and self-worth. When you step into the higher arena of self-sacrifice, you meet individuals who have learnt what it means to deny themselves, take up their cross and follow Jesus completely. These are the Christians you want to commend you to God!
1Pe 2:20 For what credit is it if, when you are beaten for your faults, you take it patiently? But when you do good and suffer, if you take it patiently, this is commendable before God.
1Pe 2:21 For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps:
1Pe 2:23 who, when He was reviled, did not revile in return; when He suffered, He did not threaten, but committed Himself to Him who judges righteously;

Mat 16:24 Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.

Rom 16:1 I commend to you Phoebe our sister, who is a servant of the church in Cenchrea,
Rom 16:2 that you may receive her in the Lord in a manner worthy of the saints, and assist her in whatever business she has need of you; for indeed she has been a helper of many and of myself also.
Rom 16:3 Greet Priscilla and Aquila, my fellow workers in Christ Jesus,
Rom 16:4 who risked their own necks for my life, to whom not only I give thanks, but also all the churches of the Gentiles.
Rom 16:5 Likewise greet the church that is in their house. Greet my beloved Epaenetus, who is the firstfruits of Achaia to Christ.
Rom 16:6 Greet Mary, who labored much for us.
Rom 16:7 Greet Andronicus and Junia, my countrymen and my fellow prisoners, who are of note among the apostles, who also were in Christ before me.
Rom 16:8 Greet Amplias, my beloved in the Lord.
Rom 16:9 Greet Urbanus, our fellow worker in Christ, and Stachys, my beloved.
Rom 16:10 Greet Apelles, approved in Christ. Greet those who are of the household of Aristobulus.

2. I commend you to the Word of His Grace
2Pe 1:2 Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord,
2Pe 1:3 as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness,
How Is our grace and peace multiplied?
By growing in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.
How do we do that?
By reading His Word and studying to show ourselves approved to God, a good worker, rightly dividing the word of Truth.
2Ti 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

3. God’s Word is able to build you up
There is a prophetic quality in the Word of God, which if received by faith through the channel or vessel God chooses, will build you up.
Peter was there when God spoke about Jesus at the transfiguration. But he says that we have a more sure Word:
2Pe 1:16 For we did not follow cunningly devised fables when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of His majesty.
2Pe 1:17 For He received from God the Father honor and glory when such a voice came to Him from the Excellent Glory: “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
2Pe 1:18 And we heard this voice which came from heaven when we were with Him on the holy mountain.
2Pe 1:19 And so we have the prophetic word confirmed, which you do well to heed as a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts;
2Pe 1:20 knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation,
2Pe 1:21 for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.

4. God’s Word can give you an inheritance among the sanctified.
Heb_2:11 For both He who sanctifies and those who are being sanctified are all of one, for which reason He is not ashamed to call them brethren,
Heb_10:10 By that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
Heb_10:14 For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified.

If you allow Jesus to sanctify you by the washing of water of the word, He who sanctifies and he who is being sanctified becomes one! This is a great revelation! Let me help you and you partake of my nature and gain an inheritance you didn’t even deserve! Wow!
Eph 5:25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her,
Eph 5:26 that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word,
Eph 5:27 that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish.

5. God’s Word gives you a standing among the sanctified saints of heaven who have gone before you. A standing amongst the elders of the faith.
Operating in faith helps us to obtain a good report:
Heb 11:1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
Heb 11:2 For by it the elders obtained a good testimony.
