The Lord has given you the city

Passage: Joshua 6
Service Type:

The Lord has given you the city
Preached by Apostle Aje Pelser, Harvester Reformational Church, Cape Town, 15th February, 2026
Strategies for taking a city for Jesus
Jos 6:2 And the LORD said to Joshua: “See! I have given Jericho into your hand, its king, and the mighty men of valor.
Jos 6:3 You shall march around the city, all you men of war; you shall go all around the city once. This you shall do six days.
Jos 6:4 And seven priests shall bear seven trumpets of rams’ horns before the ark. But the seventh day you shall march around the city seven times, and the priests shall blow the trumpets.
Jos 6:5 It shall come to pass, when they make a long blast with the ram’s horn, and when you hear the sound of the trumpet, that all the people shall shout with a great shout; then the wall of the city will fall down flat. And the people shall go up every man straight before him.”

1. God gives us this city. When we arrived in Cape Town, God told us this will be a city-wide church. It has been over the years and planted out several churches from Milnerton. Later, the regions become hubs for Harvester Households and more recently, we have begun planting satellite churches. There are now many affiliated Harvester Reformational Churches in South Africa, with network churches in central, West Africa, and more relating churches in Asia.

2. Orbit the city regularly. Jesus went about in a circuit teaching, preaching and healing.
Mar 6:6 And He marvelled because of their unbelief. Then He went about the villages in a circuit, teaching.
Mat_4:23 And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease among the people.
Mat_9:35 Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people.

3. God’s presence orbits with you – the ark of the covenant represents God’s presence in the Old Testament. In the New Testament, we have the indwelling Spirit of God. John 14:23.

4. Obedience – a key for victory. Don’t speak your opinion while the Lord is setting up the victory. Follow the timing of the Lord for strategy. Jos 6:19 But all the silver and gold, and vessels of bronze and iron, are consecrated to the LORD; they shall come into the treasury of the LORD.” Disobedience has consequences.

5. Understand the victory of the seven – seven priests with seven rams horns. The Seventh Seal releases the seventh trumpet. Revelation series.
In the Bible, the number 7 symbolizes divine perfection, completion, and spiritual wholeness, appearing over 700 times to represent the fullness of God’s work and order. Originating in Genesis 1-2 where God rests on the seventh day after creating the world, it signifies a finished, holy, or perfect work.
Key Aspects and Occurrences of the Number 7:
Creation and Rest: God created the world in 6 days and rested on the 7th, establishing the Sabbath and the weekly cycle.
Completeness in Revelation: The Book of Revelation is filled with sevens, including seven churches, seals, trumpets, and bowls, signifying the complete, total outpouring of God’s judgment
.
Symbolic Meanings: The number is associated with divine perfection, holy, and spiritual completeness.
Biblical Examples:
Jericho: The walls fell after the Israelites marched around them seven times on the seventh day (Joshua 6).
Forgiveness: Jesus instructed to forgive “seventy times seven” (Matthew 18:22), representing unlimited, complete forgiveness.
Judgement/Testing: Seven-day periods are often used for cleansing, purification, or judgment (e.g., seven days of, seven years of).
Divine Intervention: Seven frequently marks scenes of divine intervention or covenant, such as the7 lamps in the Tabernacle or the seven feasts of the Lord.
The number 7 is often contrasted with 6, which is viewed as the number of humanity and imperfection, reinforcing that 7 is the ultimate number of God’s perfection.

6. Blast of the rams’ horns – sound of the trumpet – the Lord told us to trumpet now. We are skilled trumpeters in the earth. We make a clear sound of the Lord in and through us.
Here are some interesting scriptures about e sound of the trumpet. It often coincides with the voice of the Lord, and it precedes a divine Judgment. It indicates a rallying point in battle and releases warfare strategy. Our lives, both individually and corporately should make a clear sound. In apostolic frequency, we resonate the testimony of Jesus and the reformation of His Church to prepare for His coming and bring about the restoration of all things.

1Co_14:8 For if the trumpet makes an uncertain sound, who will prepare for battle?

1Co_15:52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.

1Th_4:16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first.

Rev_1:10 I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s Day, and I heard behind me a loud voice, as of a trumpet,

Rev_4:1 After these things I looked, and behold, a door standing open in heaven. And the first voice which I heard was like a trumpet speaking with me, saying, “Come up here, and I will show you things which must take place after this.”

Rev_8:13 And I looked, and I heard an angel flying through the midst of heaven, saying with a loud voice, “Woe, woe, woe to the inhabitants of the earth, because of the remaining blasts of the trumpet of the three angels who are about to sound!”

Rev_9:14 saying to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, “Release the four angels who are bound at the great river Euphrates.”

7. A Great shout of the Lord coincides with the trumpet. Jos 6:16 And the seventh time it happened, when the priests blew the trumpets, that Joshua said to the people: “Shout, for the LORD has given you the city!
