Spiritual Gifts
1Co 12:1 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant:
1Co 12:2 You know that you were Gentiles, carried away to these dumb idols, however you were led.
1Co 12:3 Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God calls Jesus accursed, and no one can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit.
1Co 12:4 There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.
1Co 12:5 There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord.
1Co 12:6 And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all.
1Co 12:7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all:
1Co 12:8 for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit,
1Co 12:9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit,
1Co 12:10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues.
1Co 12:11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.
Confessing Jesus as Lord is the first step to accessing the gifts of the Spirit. It is by the Spirit of God that we confess His Lordship over our lives. Jesus is building His church and the tools he uses include the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
The Orbits of Gifts
Different distributions of spiritual gifts; ministries and divine energy motivating these gifts in their operation. “But the same God who operates them all in their sphere.” Wuest’s Translation.
If you combine the gifts of the Spirit in different spheres you get the following:
1. Revelation gifts: knowledge; wisdom and discerning of spirits.
2. Power gifts: Faith, healings and working of miracles.
3. Utterance gifts: Prophecy; tongues and interpretation.
Through experience we have learnt that the Holy Spirit will activate and combine several gifts that are the most important for the ministry to an individual, or even a group of people in a church.
For instance: a word of knowledge will come to reveal the type of healing required, but a gift of faith is needed to step out and operate in the healing power of God in the name of Jesus.
A word of wisdom will be accompanied by a gift of faith but is often revealed through tongues and interpretation.
The working of miracles will require discerning of spirits in order to identify a spirit of infirmity. The power is unlocked by the discernment accompanied by faith.
Tongues and interpretation will unlock mysteries and give prophetic direction and vision. The interpretation will often supply a word of knowledge and wisdom to move forward with strategic accuracy.
The gift of healings will be accompanied by wisdom to live in divine health.
The best gift, then, releases God’s will and power to equip the specific person being ministered to in prayerful waiting on the Lord.
The baptism of the Holy Spirit immerses us in the spheres of the gifts of the Holy Spirit and will help us flow more easily from one gift to another and acknowledge the same in each other. In a body of believers, one will have faith, and another will prophesy. Another will work miracles and be complemented by one who adds wisdom to the conversation. Some will give an inspired spiritual utterance and if they don’t have the interpretation, another will supply it.
Operating in the gifts of the Holly Spirit without the concept of a local church causes error and lacks accountability. Remember the principle that the church grows as we all do our share, so practise contributing the operation of the gifts of the Holy Spirit in your household groups, your spheres of influence for the benefit of all.
