Jesus Christ the Same
Hebrews 13:8: ‘Jesus Christ the same yesterday, today & forever’.
James 1:17: ‘…the Father of lights with whom there is no variance nor shadow of turning
Numbers 23:19: ‘God is not a man that He should lie, nor a son of man that He should repent? Has He said and will not do it? Or has He spoken and will He not make it good?’
One of the most amazing character traits of Jesus is the fact that He is always the same. That is what makes Him so reliable. You can depend on Him because He is always the same. He never changes. He does not allow circumstances or events to change Him. He does not allow people to change Him. He cannot change. He is God.
And there is no variance or shadow of turning with Him.
If He said something He will do it. If He speaks He will make it good.
This gives us confidence to trust Him. We can put our faith in God because He never changes.
The way He was yesterday is the way He is today and will be tomorrow. He is a rock of our salvation. He is immovable, strong and steadfast. He does not give way when you put pressure on Him.
A false witness is like a sore tooth: if you bite it will hurt. It is like a table with a broken leg. When you put weight on it will tumble and fall. Our God is not like that.
The Bible shows us what God was like in the past. It shows us what Jesus was like and it promises that He will be the same today and forever. If Jesus healed the sick in the past, He will do it again. If He forgave sins in the past He will do it today and tomorrow. If He delivered from demonic oppression in the past He will do it again!
He will do it again and again and again! He’s the same yesterday as He always have been!
Shakespeare wrote about true love and said:
‘Let me not to the marriage of true minds admit impediments. Love is not love which alters when it alteration finds, or bends with the remover to remove; o no, it is an ever –fixed mark that looks on tempests and is never shaken; it is the star to every wandering bark, whose worth’s unknown, although his height be taken.
Love’s not time’s fool, though rosy lips and cheeks within his bending sickle’s compass come; love alters not with his brief hours and weeks, but bears it out even to the edge of doom.
If this be error and upon me prov’d, I never writ, nor no man ever lov’d.’
(Sonnet CXVI)
Here are some indications of God’s steadfastness:
God’s love towards us never changes
God’s care for us never ceases
God’s provision for us never falters
God’s grace is sufficient for us
God’s peace surpasses our understanding
God’s joy is our strength
God’s understanding is omniscient
God’s power is omnipotent
God’s mercy endures forever
God’s guidance is sure
God’s wisdom is never ending
God’s purposes will stand
God’s compassion will never fail
God’s faithfulness is as high as the clouds
God’s longsuffering is our salvation
God’s justice is certain
God’s Word is eternal
Jesus depended on His Father and we can depend on Jesus. His Holy Spirit leads and guides us into all truth and shows us things to come. His anointing that abides within us teaches us concerning all things. He teaches us the ways of God and once we know the ways of God we can depend on them because God never changes. There is no shadow of turning with God. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever.
Amen.
