Helping Apostles through Prayer
Apostle Paul gives us clues in his second letter to the Corinthian church, that enable us to understand how to help apostles through prayer.
As we back him in prayer this month, while he is on his reformational tour of Europe, let's pray accurately and take Paul's advice. In a recent email Apostle Andre thanked the church for the overwhelming support. Prophet Nola says that this is the first time that she feels the church is carrying her in prayer while apostle Andre is on tour. She thanked the church this morning and encouraged believers that their prayers were making a difference!Helping Apostles Through Prayer
Preached, MBC 21/10/2004, HRC 7th November 2004.
By Apostle Aje Pelser
Scripture: 2 Corinthians 1:10,11
'On Him we set our hope that he will continue to deliver us, as you help us by your prayers. Then many will give thanks on our behalf for the gracious favour granted us in answer to the prayers of many.'
Background:
The first Corinthian Letter dealt with sins in the local church and gifts and functions.
In circa A.D. 55, shortly after the first Corinthian letter, members of the church in Corinth were still unrepentant and false teachers were creeping in, challenging the authority of Paul.
2 Cor. 1:23
'It was to avoid hurting you that I refrained from coming to Corinth…' reveals that Paul actually cancelled his visit to give them time to change.
In fact, the second letter he wrote to them reveals some deep insights into the person and ministry of an apostle
Hence apostle Paul gives us clues that enable us to understand how to help apostles through prayer.
1 – Move from placing trust in self to trusting the resurrection power of God. 2 Cor. 1:9. God often places apostles in severely testing situations to force them to transfer trust to God who raises the dead.
A person praying for an apostle needs a similar mindset in order to intercede effectively.
2 – Continually invoke God's ability to deliver. 'Who has delivered us from this great death…'
Deliverance is for oppressed, but sometimes one forgets the situations that apostles are continually confronted with on a regular basis. Pray for their deliverance. Deliverance from persecutions, false accusations, demonic forces that seek to hinder the spreading of the gospel and edification of the church.
3 – Stay in prayer for God's sent ones.
'You also helping us together in prayer for us.'
People often wonder whether they have to be on a certain spiritual level in order to pray for church leaders. Stop wondering – just do it and realize that a simple childlike prayer can assist an apostle tremendously.
4 – Enter a cycle of thanksgiving.
When one prays for an apostle that is spearheading a move of God, one can enter the rewards for such a ministry by giving financial and spiritual support. When one prays for a tour such as the one in Europe now, one enters the thanksgiving cycle – others who thank God for such a ministry send their thanks via the spirit to you. God sees and rewards such support in many ways: financially doors will open for your business, your prayer life will be enhanced, your faith in God's ability to answer pray will grow, your area of life and ministry will be affected by the sharing of your testimony, people around you will recognize that you really serve a living God.
'Thanks given … by many persons on our behalf…' See also the Philippian Letter.
5 – Unlock the grace and Favour needed for apostolic ministry. This only comes in answer to the prayers of many.
Apostles need an organized prayer movement behind them, like the shaft of a spear to help them penetrate the spiritual fortresses and strongholds in a area to which God has sent them.
Such prayer by many people, allows apostles to access the grace and favour needed to spearhead God's move in His church.
Such loyalty and devotion in prayer is appreciated and rewarded.
When praying for an apostle remember the following:
Pray for boldness that the apostle may speak as he ought to speak.
Ask God to confirm His word being preached with signs and wonders following to glorify the name of Jesus.
Implore God that He will use apostles to open people's eyes to see what is the hope of their calling and the riches God has deposited in them, along with the power of God available in their lives.
Pray that people will receive God's sent ones and receive rewards of perspective, wisdom, signs and wonders and setting in order the things that are lacking. In addition, pray that God will use the apostle to impart some spiritual gift to the people he is sent to, that their mutual faith may encourage all involved.
Thank you for your service in prayer. God sees and hears, yes, answers prayer in Jesus Name. Amen.
