Holy Convocation
Holy Convocation
Prepared by Apostle Aje Pelser
Divine Mandate:
16 July 2023 part of a Word God gave me
“Select leaders from the regions you represent in My kingdom and call them to a holy convocation. I am the Lord, and I build my church.
Be strong and courageous and take the land I am giving you. Step into my new plans for your life and don’t look back but forward towards the hope of glory of Christ in you.
This is your ecclesia, the apostolic council and your companions who walk with you and fight along your side. Call them out from their activities into the room I have shown you. From there you will truly synergize this move of God. They will see My glory together and recognize My wisdom in you. Be bold and be strong for I am with you!”
Please note that I have included the context of the scriptures quoted so that a clear picture of the New Testament practise of convocations can be studied further.
Definitions of Convocation
Definitions of the word from the Bible should not be limited to the concept of sacred assemblies, but should also include the proclamation and rehearsing of the Word in public:
Hebrew Root of Holy Convocation
Leviticus 23:2
“Speak to the people of Israel and say to them, These are the appointed feasts of the Lord (YHWH) that you shall proclaim as holy convocations (miqra); they are my appointed feasts.”

Leviticus 23:3
“Six days shall work be done, but on the seventh day is a Sabbath of solemn rest, a holy convocation (miqra). You shall do no work. It is a Sabbath to the Lord (YHWH) in all your dwelling places.”
The English word “convocation” found often in Leviticus 23, is a translation from the Hebrew word “miqra.”
The word is used nearly exclusively in the context of the mo’edim, or YHWH’s appointed days such as Passover or the Sabbath, and usually translated as convocation or assembly in most English Bible translations.
When one examines the word “miqra” in a Strong’s concordance, one will see that Strong’s repeatedly mentions miqra to be an assembly or convocation.
4744. מִקְרָא miqraʾ, mik-raw´; from 7121; something called out, i.e. a public meeting (the act, the persons, or the place); also a rehearsal:—assembly, calling, convocation, reading.
The word used for holy is: H6944 qôdesh
BDB Definition:
1) apartness, holiness, sacredness, separateness
1a) apartness, sacredness, holiness
1a1) of God
1a2) of places
1a3) of things
1b) set-apartness, separateness
Calling the nation to hear and understand the Word
A good example of ‘miqra” can be found in Nehemiah 8:8
They read from the book, from the Law of God, clearly, and they gave the sense, so that the people understood the reading (miqra).
When we read the Bible, we are proclaiming or reciting the Word of God. It simply isn’t a “reading.” We don’t simply “read” the Word of God. We recite it and proclaim it. We memorize it. We rehearse it.
Neh 8:1 Now all the people gathered together as one man in the open square that was in front of the Water Gate; and they told Ezra the scribe to bring the Book of the Law of Moses, which the LORD had commanded Israel.
Neh 8:2 So Ezra the priest brought the Law before the assembly of men and women and all who could hear with understanding on the first day of the seventh month.
Neh 8:3 Then he read from it in the open square that was in front of the Water Gate from morning until midday, before the men and women and those who could understand; and the ears of all the people were attentive to the Book of the Law.
Neh 8:4 So Ezra the scribe stood on a platform of wood which they had made for the purpose; and beside him, at his right hand, stood Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Urijah, Hilkiah, and Maaseiah; and at his left hand Pedaiah, Mishael, Malchijah, Hashum, Hashbadana, Zechariah, and Meshullam.
Neh 8:5 And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people, for he was standing above all the people; and when he opened it, all the people stood up.
Neh 8:6 And Ezra blessed the LORD, the great God. Then all the people answered, “Amen, Amen!” while lifting up their hands. And they bowed their heads and worshiped the LORD with their faces to the ground.
Neh 8:7 Also Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodijah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, and the Levites, helped the people to understand the Law; and the people stood in their place.
Neh 8:8 So they read distinctly from the book, in the Law of God; and they gave the sense, and helped them to understand the reading.
New Testament Convocation Moments:
Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount
When Jesus began to teach His disciples on the Beatitudes Mount overlooking the sea of Galilee, He was announcing the blessed New Covenant values of His kingdom. There was a natural amphitheatre that allowed his voice to carry over the people who followed him from the nearby town of Capernaum. It is a wonderful example of a holy convocation.
Whereas the ten commandments clearly defined the laws of God, the beatitudes fulfilled those laws by explaining the Spirit of God behind commandments.
Mount Sinai was full of thunder and lightning, and God was shrouded in the clouds with fire. Jesus spoke gently and offered words of peace. The ten commandments started with “Thou Shalt…” and the beatitudes began with “Blessed are they…”
The laws of the Old Covenant were mostly externally observed and enforced, while Jesus’ beatitudes went deeper and internalized the values of the King for His kingdom come.
The constitution of the laws of the kingdom of heaven were summarized in Matthew 5 and the extended sermon remains the longest recorded message that Jesus gave his disciples.
Gordon Lindsay gives a wonderful summary of the beatitudes that we have incorporated in our Life of Christ course. (Gordon Lindsay, Life and Teachings Of Christ; Volume III, Christ for the Nations, Inc, Dallas Texas, USA 1987. )
Mat 5:2 Then He opened His mouth and taught them, saying:
Mat 5:3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Mat 5:4 Blessed are those who mourn, For they shall be comforted.
Mat 5:5 Blessed are the meek, For they shall inherit the earth.
Mat 5:6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, For they shall be filled.
Mat 5:7 Blessed are the merciful, For they shall obtain mercy.
Mat 5:8 Blessed are the pure in heart, For they shall see God.
Mat 5:9 Blessed are the peacemakers, For they shall be called sons of God.
Mat 5:10 Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Mat 5:11 “Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake.
Mat 5:12 Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
Poverty of spirit is a realization of our state without God as our source. It is also a detachment from the values and priorities of the world and its systems of wealth and control. Jesus showed us how to abandon comfort and sympathy while enduring trials of faith. He let go of worldly favour and popularity to obtain the favour of God by faith. Only a truly detached soul can handle large sums of money, without allowing the wealth to compromise values and purpose. Poverty in monetary terms is not necessarily a sign of holiness. True holiness is found in dependence on God as a source of all fulfilment.
Mourning is a part of life. Does not the Messiah give us oil of joy for mourning? That type of faith filled mourning is exchanged at the cross for oil of joy in believing by the Holy Spirit, who remains a comforter for us.
Meekness is not weakness but our strength under God’s control. We learn from Jesus to find rest for our souls – He is meek and humble. Matt. 11:28-30; 1 Pet. 2:23.
Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness. Matt. 5:6Hunger and thirst remain some of the strongest human appetites. If we can direct that towards the bread of heaven that Jesus gives, we will remain filled with living water and words of spirit and life forever, while the Lord will also add the other things to our lives. Matt. 6:33; John 4:14; John 6:35
Mercy triumphs over judgment because it reveals God’s ability to show mercy. Obtain grace and mercy to help you in your time of need from God’s throne of grace when you pray. Heb. 4:16
Blessed are the pure in heart – the blessing is the revelation of God in their lives – they will see God! Keep your heart pure because out of it flows the issues of life. Ps. 51
The world is waiting for the revelation of the sons of God – Jesus is the prince of peace. Blessed are the peacemakers for they will be called sons of God! John 17:21; Rom. 8;19
Persecution is part of being a Christian. It is a promotion from the Lord. Don’ see suffering for the Gospel as a gate crasher to your party. Embrace Godly suffering by denying yourself, taking up your cross daily as you follow Jesus. Rejoice because your reward is in heaven – lay up treasures in heaven where thief does not break in to steal and moth and rust do not destroy. A holy convocation will include the proclamations of Jesus and raise the standard of holy living to prepare the bride of Christ for the great Wedding Feast of the Lamb!
Pentecost Proclamations and Assembly
When Peter explained the prophecies of Joel at Pentecost, sharing the revelation that this is indeed that which was prophesied before.
Act 2:14 But Peter, standing up with the eleven, raised his voice and said to them, “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and heed my words.
Act 2:15 For these are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day.
Act 2:16 But this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:
Act 2:17 ‘AND IT SHALL COME TO PASS IN THE LAST DAYS, SAYS GOD, THAT I WILL POUR OUT OF MY SPIRIT ON ALL FLESH; YOUR SONS AND YOUR DAUGHTERS SHALL PROPHESY, YOUR YOUNG MEN SHALL SEE VISIONS, YOUR OLD MEN SHALL DREAM DREAMS.
Act 2:18 AND ON MY MENSERVANTS AND ON MY MAIDSERVANTS I WILL POUR OUT MY SPIRIT IN THOSE DAYS; AND THEY SHALL PROPHESY.
Act 2:19 I WILL SHOW WONDERS IN HEAVEN ABOVE AND SIGNS IN THE EARTH BENEATH: BLOOD AND FIRE AND VAPOR OF SMOKE.
Act 2:20 THE SUN SHALL BE TURNED INTO DARKNESS, AND THE MOON INTO BLOOD, BEFORE THE COMING OF THE GREAT AND AWESOME DAY OF THE LORD.
Act 2:21 AND IT SHALL COME TO PASS THAT WHOEVER CALLS ON THE NAME OF THE LORD SHALL BE SAVED.’
Act 2:22 “Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a Man attested by God to you by miracles, wonders, and signs which God did through Him in your midst, as you yourselves also know—
Corporate Prayer
During the powerful prayer of the early church, they recited prophetic scriptures and made proclamations in line with God’s purposes:
Act 4:23 And being let go, they went to their own companions and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said to them.
Act 4:24 So when they heard that, they raised their voice to God with one accord and said: “Lord, You are God, who made heaven and earth and the sea, and all that is in them,
Act 4:25 who by the mouth of Your servant David have said: ‘WHY DID THE NATIONS RAGE, AND THE PEOPLE PLOT VAIN THINGS?
Act 4:26 THE KINGS OF THE EARTH TOOK THEIR STAND, AND THE RULERS WERE GATHERED TOGETHER AGAINST THE LORD AND AGAINST HIS CHRIST.’
Act 4:27 “For truly against Your holy Servant Jesus, whom You anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the people of Israel, were gathered together
Act 4:28 to do whatever Your hand and Your purpose determined before to be done.
Act 4:29 Now, Lord, look on their threats, and grant to Your servants that with all boldness they may speak Your word,
Act 4:30 by stretching out Your hand to heal, and that signs and wonders may be done through the name of Your holy Servant Jesus.”
Act 4:31 And when they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness.
Church assembled for teaching:
Act 11:26 And when he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. So it was that for a whole year they assembled with the church and taught a great many people. And the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch.
Sending Ministries forth
Acts 13 when Barnabas and Saul were prayed over and sent,
Act 13:1 Now in the church that was at Antioch there were certain prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon who was called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul.
Act 13:2 As they ministered to the Lord and fasted, the Holy Spirit said, “Now separate to Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.”
Act 13:3 Then, having fasted and prayed, and laid hands on them, they sent them away.
Judging Important Matters of Doctrine and Church Life
Acts 15 when the Jerusalem Apostles convened to read and make a proclamation concerning the Gentiles getting saved. Notice how previous traditions and religious zealots tried to control the new converts and put unnecessary burdens on them, Thank the Lord the Holy Spirit inspired the apostles to raise the standard of spiritual liberty bought by Jesus Christ on the cross and enforced through His resurrection and implementation of the new covenant.
Act 15:12 Then all the multitude kept silent and listened to Barnabas and Paul declaring how many miracles and wonders God had worked through them among the Gentiles.
Act 15:13 And after they had become silent, James answered, saying, “Men and brethren, listen to me:
Act 15:14 Simon has declared how God at the first visited the Gentiles to take out of them a people for His name.
Act 15:15 And with this the words of the prophets agree, just as it is written:
Act 15:16 ‘AFTER THIS I WILL RETURN AND WILL REBUILD THE TABERNACLE OF DAVID, WHICH HAS FALLEN DOWN; I WILL REBUILD ITS RUINS, AND I WILL SET IT UP;
Act 15:17 SO THAT THE REST OF MANKIND MAY SEEK THE LORD, EVEN ALL THE GENTILES WHO ARE CALLED BY MY NAME, SAYS THE LORD WHO DOES ALL THESE THINGS.’
Act 15:18 “Known to God from eternity are all His works.
Act 15:19 Therefore I judge that we should not trouble those from among the Gentiles who are turning to God,
Act 15:20 but that we write to them to abstain from things polluted by idols, from sexual immorality, from things strangled, and from blood.
Act 15:21 For Moses has had throughout many generations those who preach him in every city, being read in the synagogues every Sabbath.”
Extended Proclamations of the Word in a Region
Apostle Paul also had moments when he explains the new covenant and holds daily teachings and rehearsals of the Word in Ephesus so that the whole of Asia heard the word – the word grew mightily and prevailed. The effect of miqra releasing powerful signs and wonders confirming God’s word.
Act 17:10 Then the brethren immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea. When they arrived, they went into the synagogue of the Jews.
Act 17:11 These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so.
Act 17:12 Therefore many of them believed, and also not a few of the Greeks, prominent women as well as men.
Addressing the elders in Ephesus
Act 19:8 And he went into the synagogue and spoke boldly for three months, reasoning and persuading concerning the things of the kingdom of God.
Act 19:9 But when some were hardened and did not believe, but spoke evil of the Way before the multitude, he departed from them and withdrew the disciples, reasoning daily in the school of Tyrannus.
Act 19:10 And this continued for two years, so that all who dwelt in Asia heard the word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks.
Act 19:11 Now God worked unusual miracles by the hands of Paul,
Act 19:12 so that even handkerchiefs or aprons were brought from his body to the sick, and the diseases left them and the evil spirits went out of them.
Act 19:13 Then some of the itinerant Jewish exorcists took it upon themselves to call the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, “We exorcise you by the Jesus whom Paul preaches.”
Act 19:14 Also there were seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, who did so.
Act 19:15 And the evil spirit answered and said, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you?”
Act 19:16 Then the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, overpowered them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.
Act 19:17 This became known both to all Jews and Greeks dwelling in Ephesus; and fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.
Act 19:18 And many who had believed came confessing and telling their deeds.
Act 19:19 Also, many of those who had practiced magic brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all. And they counted up the value of them, and it totaled fifty thousand pieces of silver.
Act 19:20 So the word of the Lord grew mightily and prevailed.
Public as well as private convocations
Apostle Paul calls for the elders of the church and summarizes his purpose in Ephesus
There is a pattern of sharing God’s Word publicly and from house to house. Some church movements are ignoring public gatherings in favour of only meeting in homes. Here is the balance.
Calling together the assembly of believers while reading and proclaiming is still important – to take time from our busy lives to read the word together in public and from house to house as Acts 20:20 suggests in the early church.
Act 20:17 From Miletus he sent to Ephesus and called for the elders of the church.
Act 20:18 And when they had come to him, he said to them: “You know, from the first day that I came to Asia, in what manner I always lived among you,
Act 20:19 serving the Lord with all humility, with many tears and trials which happened to me by the plotting of the Jews;
Act 20:20 how I kept back nothing that was helpful, but proclaimed it to you, and taught you publicly and from house to house,
Act 20:21 testifying to Jews, and also to Greeks, repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.
Convocations in the Heavenly Realm
Revelation 5 where the Lamb is worthy to take the scroll and open the seals. A heavenly holy convocation in the spiritual realm is the foundation of our thoughts on convocation. When God is enthroned in the praises of His people and we hear what the spirit is saying to the churches we sense and understand the will of God and are changed from glory to glory in presence together.
Rev 5:1 And I saw in the right hand of Him who sat on the throne a scroll written inside and on the back, sealed with seven seals.
Rev 5:2 Then I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, “Who is worthy to open the scroll and to loose its seals?”
Rev 5:3 And no one in heaven or on the earth or under the earth was able to open the scroll, or to look at it.
Rev 5:4 So I wept much, because no one was found worthy to open and read the scroll, or to look at it.
Rev 5:5 But one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep. Behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has prevailed to open the scroll and to loose its seven seals.”
Rev 5:6 And I looked, and behold, in the midst of the throne and of the four living creatures, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as though it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent out into all the earth.
Rev 5:7 Then He came and took the scroll out of the right hand of Him who sat on the throne.
Rev 5:8 Now when He had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each having a harp, and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints.
Rev 5:9 And they sang a new song, saying: “You are worthy to take the scroll, And to open its seals; For You were slain, And have redeemed us to God by Your blood Out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation,
Rev 5:10 And have made us kings and priests to our God; And we shall reign on the earth.”
Rev 5:11 Then I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels around the throne, the living creatures, and the elders; and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands,
Rev 5:12 saying with a loud voice: “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain To receive power and riches and wisdom, And strength and honor and glory and blessing!”
Rev 5:13 And every creature which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, I heard saying: “Blessing and honor and glory and power Be to Him who sits on the throne, And to the Lamb, forever and ever!”
The Church of the Firstborn Registered in heaven:
We understand that we enter the holiest by faith in Jesus’ work on the cross, through the veil that is his flesh. Understand ‘flesh” as His Body, the Church today. Churches on earth are entry points into the true church of the Firstborn, registered in heaven. We are physically manifesting the spiritual image of Christ in the heavenly realm, through many membered bodies of believers and churches across the world.
Heb 12:22 But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, to an innumerable company of angels,
Heb 12:23 to the general assembly and church of the firstborn who are registered in heaven, to God the Judge of all, to the spirits of just men made perfect,
Heb 12:24 to Jesus the Mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaks better things than that of Abel.
Heb 12:25 See that you do not refuse Him who speaks. For if they did not escape who refused Him who spoke on earth, much more shall we not escape if we turn away from Him who speaks from heaven,
Heb 12:26 whose voice then shook the earth; but now He has promised, saying, “YET ONCE MORE I SHAKE NOT ONLY THE EARTH, BUT ALSO HEAVEN.”
Heb 12:27 Now this, “YET ONCE MORE,” indicates the removal of those things that are being shaken, as of things that are made, that the things which cannot be shaken may remain.
Heb 12:28 Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us have grace, by which we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear.
Heb 12:29 For our God is a consuming fire.
We have learnt to recognise and celebrate Christ in believers, the hope of glory. We can only see the full image of His Son together and not alone.
Interferometry is a wonderful concept of growing our collective aperture of spiritual vision and hearing God’s voice. The Square Kilometre Array in Carnarvon, South Africa, is a good example of a collection of radio telescopes stretched apart over a kilometre, growing the catchment of radio frequencies together so that their collective gathering of information is larger than any single telescope. Together, they form one of the largest data gathering radio telescopes in the world. That is the genius of collaboration in the global network of churches that hear God’s voice. There are things I am picking up in the spirit, but my full hearing is only complete when I hear what God is saying to the churches globally too. We will resonate with similar revelations and discover things that we’re lacking in our spheres of influence. That way Jesus fills up all things:
Eph 1:17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him,
Eph 1:18 the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints,
Eph 1:19 and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power
Eph 1:20 which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places,
Eph 1:21 far above all principality and power and might and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come.
Eph 1:22 And He put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things to the church,
Eph 1:23 which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.
While not all gatherings are holy convocations – we can argue that Jesus’ words turn even the smallest divine connections into sacred meetings where the Lord’s words are rehearsed:
Mat 18:19 “Again I say to you that if two of you agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in heaven.
Mat 18:20 For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them.”
Correlations between Convocation and Ecclesia
Founding apostles of this move of God, Apostle Andre Pelser wrote about God’s Genius being the Church of the Firstborn registered in heaven, based on the revelation of Hebrews 12:22-24. The genius of God seen in a many-membered body of believers. Indeed, the greater global church also acknowledging that no single earth-bound church movement has it all together, “but together we have it all!” M. Wood quote from 2002 Apostolic Summit, Volmoed, South Africa.
Apostle Jan Oosthuizen has pointed out a correlation between the word ‘convocation’ and ‘ecclesia’ in the New Covenant. Furthermore, the concept of Jesus’ “ecclesia” can be considered the local and spiritual structure of and embodiment of the call to a holy convocation.
G1577 ekklēsia The Greek for is derived from a compound of G1537 and a derivative of G2564;
“a calling out, that is, (concretely) a popular meeting, especially a religious congregation (Jewish synagogue, or Christian community of members on earth or saints in heaven or both): – assembly, church.”
The term has its origins in Caesar’s council of military, civil and political leaders that we tasked with implemented his vision for the vast Roman empire. For instance, the development of roads to make travel between cities more manageable and safer for citizens and for trade. The ecclesia would deliberate and find solutions for the problems and implement the vision that has been agreed upon.
Christianity is at a crossroad and that church leaders are seeking “wheels within wheels of relationship,” just like the visions of Ezekiel and John in revelation. Where God’s presence moves, there is a momentum in the spirit for all who lay aside differences, humble themselves and preserve the unity of the faith. Already, we are seeing mass gatherings of Christians in worship in countries that have proven to be hard ground for evangelism. The key to harvesting the great end time harvest together is in collaboration and building strong spiritual relationships beyond the confines of traditions of men that make void the power of God.
Just last weekend, we had a baptism service in a public pool together with three churches who affiliate in the faith. Working together has so many benefits because we complemented each other so well. One church sang worship songs; another organized the venue. Yet another ensured to administration and certificates to commemorate the day. God’s harmonious church at work. One lady received deliverance from an evil spirit after emerging from the water. Another person received the baptism of the Holy Spirit and spoke in a prayer tongue as well, just like the Holy Spirit descended upon Jesus and remained when he was baptized. After he was baptized, he baptized his son, saying: “you are my beloved son in whom I am well pleased.”
If this description of holy convocations resonates with you, please contact us to arrange a call and discuss possible holy convocations in your region. We look forward to hearing from you and perhaps inspiring you to do the same wherever you are working in His vineyard!
