Hearers of the Word
Hearers of the Word
Preached by Apostle Aje Pelser, Harvester Reformational Church, Cape Town, November 2025
Here are some frequencies that will tune your spiritual ears to hear from God.
Jas 1:22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.
Jas 1:23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror;
Jas 1:24 for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was.
Jas 1:25 But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does.
Spiritual Teachers affect your spiritual ability to hear:
Isa 30:18 Therefore the LORD will wait, that He may be gracious to you; And therefore He will be exalted, that He may have mercy on you. For the LORD is a God of justice; Blessed are all those who wait for Him.
Isa 30:19 For the people shall dwell in Zion at Jerusalem; You shall weep no more. He will be very gracious to you at the sound of your cry; When He hears it, He will answer you.
Isa 30:20 And though the Lord gives you The bread of adversity and the water of affliction, Yet your teachers will not be moved into a corner anymore, But your eyes shall see your teachers.
Isa 30:21 Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way, walk in it,” Whenever you turn to the right hand Or whenever you turn to the left.
Look at the following depth of meaning in the Hebrew word for “hear”, “shâma‛” pronounced
Hearing concept in Hebrew:
“shaw-mah’”: Hebr. Strong’s #8085
“to hear intelligently, often with the implication of attention and obedience;
to hear attentively; call (gather) together; to hear carefully; to hear certainly;
consent, consider, be content, declare; to hear diligently; discern;
give ear; cause to hear, make to hear or hearken; to hear indeed;
listen, make a noise; be obedient; obey; perceive; make a proclamation;
publish, regard, shew forth, make a sound; to hear surely;
tell; understand; “whosoever heareth”; witness.
When God hears He acts, we are His children so we can do the same
I John 5:14,15
“Now this is the confidence we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.
And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him.”
Realize the following 4 things when you approach God:
1. He is Invisible
2. You must have faith in Him
3. Ask the Father in Jesus’ name
4. Response/ Action is required once you’ve heard from Him
God speaks through the still small voice
1 Kings 19:11, 12
“Then He said, “Go out, and stand on the mountain before the LORD.” And behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice.”
Matthew 17:5
“While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them; and suddenly a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Hear Him!”
Hearing the Preached Word
Matthew 13:22, 23
“Now he who received seed among the thorns is he who hears the word, and the cares of this world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and he becomes unfruitful.
Mat 13:23 But he who received seed on the good ground is he who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and produces: some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.”
Rom 10:13 For “WHOEVER CALLS ON THE NAME OF THE LORD SHALL BE SAVED.”
Rom 10:14 How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher?
Rom 10:15 And how shall they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “HOW BEAUTIFUL ARE THE FEET OF THOSE WHO PREACH THE GOSPEL OF PEACE, WHO BRING GLAD TIDINGS OF GOOD THINGS!”
Rom 10:16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, “LORD, WHO HAS BELIEVED OUR REPORT?”
Rom 10:17 So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
The Holy Spirit opens our spiritual senses
1Co 2:9 But as it is written: “EYE HAS NOT SEEN, NOR EAR HEARD, NOR HAVE ENTERED INTO THE HEART OF MAN THE THINGS WHICH GOD HAS PREPARED FOR THOSE WHO LOVE HIM.”
1Co 2:10 But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God.
Application:
Think on the last clear word you received from God: did you act on it?
If you have never heard from God – consider the passages, we read today: is there any phrase that stands out? Meditate on it and allow the Holy Spirit to illuminate it for you. What did you hear in your spirit? Is there any instruction that you can act on right away?
