And Jesus passed that way

And Jesus passed that way

Preached by Apostle Andre Pelser, Harvester Reformational Church, Cape Town

Matthew 9:9-13

When Jesus passed that way, lives changed permanently. Changes take place when Jesus passes by. Here are some changes you can expect when Jesus passes your way.

  1. Jesus knows your desire
  2. Jesus gives an opportunity to make a decision
  3. Jesus gives direction
  4. Jesus gives a challenge
  5. Jesus makes your life a challenge to others

Mathetes – ‘learner’ or one who professes to have learned certain principles from another and maintains them on that other’s authority. Matthew was the head tax collector, probably knew about Jesus and wondered if he would pass that way. His conscience plagued him because of the unreasonable taxes placed on the Jews. He could add any amount to make his commission. Then one day Jesus passed that way and called him: ‘Follow Me!’

1. Jesus knew Matthew’s desire

Jesus was led by the Spirit and His Father gave him revelation knowledge. He knew he had to encounter Matthew.

2.Jesus gave Matthew and opportunity to make a decision

Regard Jesus’ invitation as a permanent appointment. Jesus risked criticism to share a meal with Matthew, a tax collector that was hated in the Jewish community.

3.Jesus’ call gave Matthew’s life direction

From the farewell meal he followed Jesus. He spread the Gospel and wrote the Gospel to the Jews. Then he went to other nations. The Great Commission is contained in Matthew’s Gospel.

4.Once you become a follower of Jesus your life becomes a challenge to other people as you ‘pass that way’.

For instance, when Peter went to Cornelius’ household in Acts 10. Revelation was given, desires fulfilled and decisions made. When Ananias came to see Paul in Acts 9 there was revelation, desires were fulfilled and decision made and Paul’s life got new direction. Whenever Jesus ‘passes that way’ signs follow and things are revealed and lives are changed. As we go into the whole world to preach the Gospel lives are permanently changed!
