Resist the enemy

Apostle André Pelser, 2017/09/03
Preached at a Sunday Evening service

I Peter 5:6-9 gives definite procedures to resist and overcome the enemy of our souls. After salvation & deliverance the enemy tries to find a more opportune time to come against believers. He tempted Jesus after the 40 day fast in the wilderness: ‘If you are the Son of God, why don’t you…’ and found an even more opportune time when Jesus was hanging on the cross: the one thief echoed the words of Satan: ‘if you are the Son of God why don’t you come down from the cross and take us down also?’
The first procedure to resist & overcome the enemy is to prepare to resist him.
1. Prepare to resist him
Humble yourself before the mighty hand of God & submit to Him by casting all your care upon Him because He cares for you. Be sober & vigilant for the devil goes about like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour.
2. Process of Resisting
Be steadfast in your faith. Christ conquered Satan with the Word of God. It is the sword of the Spirit. Use wisdom to apply knowledge from the Word. Know how to wield the sword.
Every victory you win is a victory for the body of Christ. Revelation 12:11 tell us they overcame by the blood of the Lamb, the word of their testimony and by not loving their lives unto death.
Remember that our spiritual weapons are not carnal but mighty to the pulling down of strongholds of the enemy. And our spiritual armor protects us: the helmet of salvation, the breastplate of righteousness, the belt of truth, the sword of the Spirit and the shield of faith. We have our feet shod with the preparation of the Gospel of Peace.
3. Participate in the victory
Remember other believers have the same fiery trials as you have. They face the same battles, the same temptation & trials of faith. God is faithful who will not allow you to be tempted above that you are able but will with the temptation make a way of escape that you might be able to bear it. (I Corinthians 10:13)
Remember the example of Christ. He used the knowledge of Scripture like a sword to defeat the devil. He did not fight in His own strength. He knew the Scriptures well. When the devil quoted half a Scripture to deceive Him Jesus quoted the whole Scripture. Accuracy in the Word of God is a mighty weapon.
Your victory becomes an example to other believers. What you overcome gives them hope to overcome. Through the working knowledge of God will you awake to righteousness & reign over sin, sickness, self & Satan. (I Corinthians 15:34)
