Source of Anointing
By Apostle Aje Pelser
Preached at Harvester Reformational Church, Cape Town, March 2016 – Part of a series.
Here are the origins of the anointing that you can explore for your life in Christ Jesus.
1. Knowing the Father is well pleased with His Son
When Jesus was baptized by John to fulfil all righteousness, the Father affirmed Jesus –
Mat 3:15 But Jesus answered and said to him, “Permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he allowed Him.
Mat 3:16 When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him.
Mat 3:17 And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
Anointing means God is well pleased with you, and you are aware of it. You operate form that position of pleasing God by faith. That confidence can’t be faked and it is result of obedience learnt through suffering, Humility and meekness are character traits that made Jesus pleasing to the Father and that made his yoke easy and his burden light.
Isa 10:27 It shall come to pass in that day That his burden will be taken away from your shoulder, And his yoke from your neck, And the yoke will be destroyed because of the anointing oil.
The Anointing breaks the yoke of expectations and doubts and fears – of wondering whether or not you are pleasing to the Father. In the business world tyrants keep their staff guessing whether or not they are in or out of favour. With God this is not so – He is a loving Father that accepts our confession of repentance and acknowledgement of Jesus’ Lordship, and when we believe Jesus is the son of God that died and rose for our sins, his pleasure is complete. The wonderful thing about Jesus’ relationship with His Father is that God said he was pleased with Jesus before he began his ministry!
Operate from the pleasure of God by faith and tart to do what the Father shows you by faith. Knowing that your belief in Jesus is the victory that overcomes the world and is also what keeps you in Your Father’s Good book of Life!
2. Christ Within the Hope of Glory
Col 1:27 To them God willed to make known what are the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles: which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.
Col 1:28 Him we preach, warning every man and teaching every man in all wisdom, that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus.
Col 1:29 To this end I also labour, striving according to His working which works in me mightily.
God’s glory is rich in you. We use that glory to preach and present every person we reach perfect in Christ Jesus. The anointing is for a purpose, not just to feel good. That feeling is on a soulish level and Christians like to confuse the two. Sure it feels great when God uses you, but do not get addicted to a feeling. That is when error sets in. What would happen if doctors had to get a feeling every time they operate? They have procedures and codes of conduct and a life calling to help people. That is more sustainable than a few goose bumps. Some preachers say they only pray for people when they get a feeling in their fingers – then that is the anointing – so they say. We have spent time with preachers like that and found them out to play a lot of mind and soul games to fabricate a false feeling of anointing. This is dangerous, because Jesus told believers to lay hands on the sick and they will recover. The anointing is released in the act of faithful obedience in Jesus’ name. The power is in the name of Jesus and obeying what He says. Of course your body and soul rejoices with your spirit and that feeling of excitement when your being lines up with God’s purpose for your life is awesome. But that is not the source of your anointing. We are looking at the origin of things.
3. Baptism of the Holy Spirit
When Jesus was baptized in water he also received the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Throughout the book of Acts this pattern repeats and the next level was a baptism of Fire. Jesus was driven into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. The testing of his faith in God’s pleased state about him, the testing of his calling and what he believed was a baptism of fire for Jesus. When he returned triumphant over all the temptations of the devil through quoting scripture and submitting Himself to God, resisting the felling serpent the devil, the angels ministered to him. From there he returned in the power of the Lord and then preached his first sermon in Nazareth saying: ‘The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me for He has anointed me to preach the Gospel to the poor…” We will look at Jesus’ anointing in depth during this series.
The outpouring of the Holy Spirit in the Book of Acts caused them to become witnesses unto Jesus in Jerusalem, then Judea and then the ends of the earth. The Gospel of the Kingdom spread as a result of the indwelling anointing. People got saved, healed and delivered. Lives shifted course. So when people claim that meetings were anointed, ask them to also testify of the results of that anointing, and you will see whether it was real or not. When there is a change in someone, the anointing of Jesus Christ did that, for with men it is impossible, but with God all things are possible. When people who oppose you end up on their knees worshipping God and repenting to you and supporting you in ministry, the anointing did that.
4. Transference of Anointing
1Ti 4:14 Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you by prophecy with the laying on of the hands of the eldership.
2Ti 1:6 Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands.
Anointing in the Old testament had much to do with the physical oil being poured over the head to the anointed. In the New Covenant, Jesus’ had the Holy Spirit and that made Him anointed. While anointing with oil happens in the New Covenant, it is a contact point for your faith and the real activation is within by faith now.
5. Abiding Anointing
1Jn 2:18 Little children, it is the last hour; and as you have heard that the Antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come, by which we know that it is the last hour.
1Jn 2:19 They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us; but they went out that they might be made manifest, that none of them were of us.
1Jn 2:20 But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you know all things.
1Jn 2:26 These things I have written to you concerning those who try to deceive you.
1Jn 2:27 But the anointing which you have received from Him abides in you, and you do not need that anyone teach you; but as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you will abide in Him.
The anointing teaches you – the job description of the Holy Spirit (Indwelling version of the anointing that Jesus has…) is to lead and guide you into all truth.
It is so typical of man to make the anointing out to be some mystical thing, like the wizards who invented gun powder claiming it was magic.
God never intended the anointing to be something mystical. In fact the meaning of Anointing is quite interesting:
Summary of Anointing:
“Anointing is a Consecration ceremony that could include smearing of oil for designation to an office. Spiritually, it is Jesus Christ enduing people with the gifts of the Holy Spirit accompanied by the necessary powers for its administration in order to produce fruit and prosperous growth (fat!)”
The challenge is to acknowledge what God has already placed inside and explore it! The way the anointing works is that you need to pour the oil into other vessels to keep the flow – like the widow’s oil that never ran dry. When you stop giving of what is inside you to others, the anointing stops. Take some time to see the anointing potential in your spirit and unleash it with the name of Jesus to heal the sick, cast out demons, operate on new levels of ability and authority and be careful to acknowledge your Source! It is not by might, not by power but by My Spirit says the Lord! Remember what Jesus said: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me because He has anointed me to preach…”
In the next installment of this series we will look at How Jesus was anointed and what that means for you.
