Passage: John 2:1-11

First Miracle of Jesus
By Apostle Aje Pelser
Based on John 2 NKJV, with excerpts from Wuest’s Translation of the Greek New Testament.

The Wedding at Cana
Joh 2:1 On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there.
Joh 2:2 Now both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding.
Joh 2:3 And when they ran out of wine, the mother of Jesus said to Him, \”They have no wine.\”
Joh 2:4 Jesus said to her, \”Woman, what does your concern have to do with Me? My hour has not yet come.\”
Joh 2:5 His mother said to the servants, \”Whatever He says to you, do it.\”
Joh 2:6 Now there were set there six waterpots of stone, according to the manner of purification of the Jews, containing twenty or thirty gallons apiece.
Joh 2:7 Jesus said to them, \”Fill the waterpots with water.\” And they filled them up to the brim.
Joh 2:8 And He said to them, \”Draw some out now, and take it to the master of the feast.\” And they took it.
Joh 2:9 When the master of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and did not know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom.
Joh 2:10 And he said to him, \”Every man at the beginning sets out the good wine, and when the guests have well drunk, then the inferior. You have kept the good wine until now!\”
Joh 2:11 This beginning of signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory; and His disciples believed in Him.
Starting Points of Miracles
Here are some starting points of a miracle ministry:
1. The miracle happened on the third day – the day of the marriage festival. Jesus was resurrected on the third – he started his miracles on the third day – His marriage to the Bride will be on the symbolic third day of his return too.
2. The Wedding is significant as it symbolizes Jesus and His Church
3. Jesus was invited – his mother was there. Jesus stands outside of some churches and knocks to come in and join the festival!
4. There was a lack of wine – symbolic of the new wine of the Holy Spirit.
5. Jesus mother drew on his power to work miracles. Someone must draw on your inward gifts of the Holy Spirit for them to start flowing out to meet the needs of others. Someone must believe that God can use you in Jesus name.
6. Jesus did not think it was time – but his mother had kept things in her heart for too long – the Spirit of God must have prompted her.
7. Those who draw from the Spirit within – the anointing to work miracles – understand the power and authority of Jesus’ word: “What He says to you, do it with dispatch.” Later Jesus would echo similar words, Joh_5:19 Then Jesus answered and said to them, \”Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner.
8. Joh_14:10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on My own authority; but the Father who dwells in Me does the works.
9. Jesus’ reality is higher than the ritual. Ritualistic ablutions of the Jews – the water jars were used to carry water for festivals on holy days, but no miracles happened in their rituals. Jesus reveals the divine in the mundane, the Jews washed and washed from the water of the pool of Siloam and never cleansed their conscience of sin. Jesus is the living water, He was sent from above to cleanse our sins. The traditions of men make void the power of God. They got so used to filling the water pots, they forgot the revelation behind the ritual.
10. Jesus told them to fill the water jars. Consider the miracle of pouring – Elisha – vessels had to be brought and the oil was poured until there were no more vessels to be found in the village! Supernatural flow needs vessels to receive it. We are carriers of new wine. New wine needs new wineskins or receptors.

Elisha and the Widow\’s Oil
2Ki 4:1 A certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets cried out to Elisha, saying, \”Your servant my husband is dead, and you know that your servant feared the LORD. And the creditor is coming to take my two sons to be his slaves.\”
2Ki 4:2 So Elisha said to her, \”What shall I do for you? Tell me, what do you have in the house?\” And she said, \”Your maidservant has nothing in the house but a jar of oil.\”
2Ki 4:3 Then he said, \”Go, borrow vessels from everywhere, from all your neighbors—empty vessels; do not gather just a few.
2Ki 4:4 And when you have come in, you shall shut the door behind you and your sons; then pour it into all those vessels, and set aside the full ones.\”
2Ki 4:5 So she went from him and shut the door behind her and her sons, who brought the vessels to her; and she poured it out.
2Ki 4:6 Now it came to pass, when the vessels were full, that she said to her son, \”Bring me another vessel.\” And he said to her, \”There is not another vessel.\” So the oil ceased.
2Ki 4:7 Then she came and told the man of God. And he said, \”Go, sell the oil and pay your debt; and you and your sons live on the rest.\”

11. Jesus needed servants who obeyed his word in order for the water to be changed into wine. Most miracles we have experienced happened through simple acts of obedience in faith.
12. The Supervisor calls the Bridegroom and approves the wine.
God will call Jesus to fetch his Bride and approve the level of the Holy Spirit In the Church one day!
13. “You have safely guarded the good wine until now.” We are stewards of the new wine until the time of the marriage feast of the Lamb.
14. The results of the first of the miracles
a. They were attestations of Jesus’ divinity
b. They Displayed His glory
c. His disciples believed on him.

Personal Application
When Jesus’ resurrection power is revealed to you someone will draw on that anointing within you. Then follow the unction of God’s Spirit and do what the Father shows you, finding people who will obey the Word God gives and supersede the ritual or traditional way of doing things. Find vessels to pour that anointing and new wine into and seek the approval of your Father above all. People who see the miracles God works in you will attest to the fact that God used you and glorify Him. Your disciples and friends will believe that Jesus is real in your life.
