Joy of the New Covenant

Passage: Gal. 4:22-26
Service Type:

Contrasting Covenants
Part of the series in Galatians entitled: “Preach the Truth.”
By Apostle Aje Pelser, Harvester Reformational Church, Cape Town, South Africa.

Today I am preaching on a very important aspect of covenant blessing. At the end you will need to decide which covenant you will pursue. My prayer is that you will follow the righteous choice of Abraham and Sarah who entered their promised land by faith long before they arrived there as a family.

Gal 4:22 For it is written that Abraham had two sons: the one by a bondwoman, the other by a freewoman.
Gal 4:23 But he who was of the bondwoman was born according to the flesh, and he of the freewoman through promise,
Gal 4:24 which things are symbolic. For these are the two covenants: the one from Mount Sinai which gives birth to bondage, which is Hagar—
Gal 4:25 for this Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia, and corresponds to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children—
Gal 4:26 but the Jerusalem above is free, which is the mother of us all.

The heavenly Jerusalem speaks to us of the church of the Firstborn registered in heaven. Hebrews 12:22-24
Heb 12:22 But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, to an innumerable company of angels,
Heb 12:23 to the general assembly and church of the firstborn who are registered in heaven, to God the Judge of all, to the spirits of just men made perfect,
Heb 12:24 to Jesus the Mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaks better things than that of Abel.

Contrasting Covenants
There is an allegory in the book of Galatians that teaches us the contrasts between two covenants:
Isaac Ishmael
Son of freewoman, Sarah Son of bondwoman, Hagar
Spiritual Israel, the true believer Natural Israel
New Covenant Old Covenant
Grace Law
Jerusalem above Mount Sinai

The promises of God to Abrahan and Sarah included a change of name. God infused His breath into their former names and made them fruitful and they eventually became a great nation. Jesus was the Seed of Abraham that blesses the whole earth.
Names change in this chapter.
Old name Meaning New name meaning
Abram “high father” Abraham “father of nations”
Sarai “princess” Sarah “mother of nations”

Gen 17:15 Then God said to Abraham, "As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall be her name.
Gen 17:16 And I will bless her and also give you a son by her; then I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of peoples shall be from her."
Gen 17:17 Then Abraham fell on his face and laughed, and said in his heart, "Shall a child be born to a man who is one hundred years old? And shall Sarah, who is ninety years old, bear a child?"
Gen 17:18 And Abraham said to God, "Oh, that Ishmael might live before You!"
Gen 17:19 Then God said: "No, Sarah your wife shall bear you a son, and you shall call his name Isaac; I will establish My covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his descendants after him.
Sarai = “princess”
1) original name of Sarah the wife of Abram or Abraham
Sarah = “noblewoman”
1) wife of Abraham and mother of Isaac

Covenant Blessings
What did the Abrahamic covenant state? (Gal 3:14)
“Unto your seed will I give this land; I will make of you a great nation; I will bless you; I will make your name great; you shall be a blessing; I will bless them that bless you and curse them that curse you; in you, all families shall be blessed.”

1. Access the Abrahamic covenant by faith in the Seed -which is Jesus Christ.
2. God wants to give you the land He has promised you. Identify that land and pray about it earnestly. Seek the Lord and enter it b faith. Occupy and conquer the land by faith today.
3. God wants to make us a great nation in the earth. But it also applies to believers who access Abrahamic blessings for their families. There is a balance between building your family name in the context of a local church and adding value to the local congregation. We are all part of a global legacy of faith here at Harvester reformational Church, Cape Town by God’s grace.
4. God will bless you. We seek the Lord’s blessing, and it helps us find favour in all aspects of life. Blessing helps us release provision and access the codes for reigning like kings while serving like priests.
5. We make God’s name great and he in turn honours us. Joh 12:26 If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also. If anyone serves Me, him My Father will honour.
6. Blessing and cursing. When you operate in blessing, God sorts out your enemies, you don’t even have to pursue them. You will look for those who hated you and not find them. You will forgive and move on effortlessly because you have entered the throne of grace to find mercy for you and those who have persecuted you, and it will help you in your time of need. To be like Jesus changes everything. If Christ is formed in us, He is our hope of eternal glory. In Him all the families of the earth are blessed and that is how we will reach families with His love and bring them into His everlasting kingdom through the church of the Firstborn registered in heaven.

Do you believe these things I am writing?
If you do, you are part of the Seed, and the blessing of the Lord is upon you. People will realize it is useless to curse you and hopefully serve the Lord like you do and get blessed too!

Generational Calling and Blessing
The Abrahamic and Sarah blessing is a generational blessing for families in Christ.
God wants to save families—if we have faith that God will save the unsaved members of the families, then pray for them every day until it happens. Then commit to making disciples of htem and taking them through the phases of Christian growth until they are integrated in a church and become pillars in His temple.
.
You either become the Isaac of joy her follows the faith of the nation builder and is in-breathed and enthused with the breath of God like Abraham and Sarah, or you follow the path of Ishmael that corresponds to the old covenant ways. There is a limited blessing to the old, but it persecutes the new. It’s difference between a religious institution that forces you to participate through condemnation, versus the spirit of liberty that breathes life into your calling and equips and empowers you to fulfil it.

Make a Decision which covenant you will enter
I believe that we who are here have decided to enter the promised of faith. “The Jerusalem above is free and is the mother of us all.” Mount Zion is the church of Jesus Christ that He builds, of which He is the Head, and this is the church we are a part of by faith. Harvester and all other churches on hte earth are portals to the ultimate church that is not of this earth, the heavenly Jerusalem, the Bride of Christ adorned for her husband, coming down out of heaven – the John saw in Revelation. Rev 21:2 Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
